Chiang Mai University (CMU) was founded in January 1964, under a Royal
Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. CMU is the first
provincial university in Thailand, based on the government’s policy and
the objectives of the northern people, as a center for academic and
occupational knowledge in order to benefit the region and the country as
a whole. This university is a place for knowledge collection, studies,
research, and knowledge transfer according to academic freedom based on
morality and academic excellence, application and transfer, and arts and
culture development. Graduates from Chiang Mai University will
emphasize self-training in order to become knowledgeable, thoughtful,
and practical persons, as well as being able to manage themselves and
other people, and work with ethics and social awareness.
Chiang Mai University's Graduate School was established on November 8,
1976, with the primary objective of regulating and supervising the
quality of graduate education. In 1990, the university adopted a policy
to introduce joint programs, which involved the integration of multiple
disciplines and the collaborative teaching of faculties or departments.
The Graduate School was designated as the main unit responsible for

From the first batch of graduate student population of 34 in the first
four degree programs in 1974, the university in 2020 serves more than
5.700 graduate students, including about more than four hundred foreign
students, in 214 degree programs offered by various departments of 29
faculties/research institutions/collages of which the lecturers number
more than 696 Ph.D holders.The university currently has 25 faculties, 3
research institutions and 2 collages. For convenience they can be
