Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarship
The selection will take place once a year, in time for the start of the academic year in August. Up to 5 new awards will be given each year. Not all awards will be made unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.
a) Eligibility
The Scholarships are open to students of all nationalities who gain admission to any Ph.D. programme at NUS. In keeping with the donor’s wishes, the scholarships will be awarded to well-rounded individuals showing exceptional promise who have an appropriate balance of intellect and character. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to service.
b) Award Amount
- A monthly stipend of S$3,000;
- Tuition, examination fees and other approved fees at NUS;
- An annual book allowance of S$500;
- A one-off air travel allowance of two return tickets of up to S$4,000 (only for overseas students); and
- A one-off laptop allowance of S$1,500;
This scholarship does not come with a bond. Please read the full terms and conditions.
c) Award Period
The award is tenable for a maximum of 4 years, subject to an annual review of the scholar’s satisfactory progress.
d) Application Procedure
Ph.D. applicants would have to indicate interest in the Scholarship via the NUS Graduate Research Programme Application System.
Apart from the other supporting documents required for Ph.D. admission, applicants interested in this scholarship must also submit a personal essay and record of co-curricular activities or community service. Short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview either in Singapore or their home country.

Research Scholarships are awarded by NUS to outstanding graduates for research leading to a higher degree at the University. The Scholarships are tenable for 1 year in the first instance and are renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress. The maximum period of award is 2-2.5 years for Master's candidates and 3-4 years for Ph.D. candidates.
Each Scholarship carries a monthly stipend of S$1,500 and a full tuition fee subsidy. No travel or other allowances are provided. No bond is required.
Research scholars may be eligible for an additional stipend of up to $500 per month upon passing the PhD qualifying examination, which is normally held 12 to 18 months after registration of candidature. The top up is renewable annually subject to good performance. It may be awarded up to a maximum of 24 months but not more than 48 months of candidature (this does not apply to research candidates in the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Design and Environment). For research candidates in the Faculty of Engineering and School of Design and Environment, the top-up is applicable up to the third year of candidature.
Research scholars may also be asked to assist in departmental work for which they can earn up to S$16,000 (gross) per annum at the current rate of remuneration. However, please note that the University does not guarantee employment to research scholars upon completion of their candidature.
Research scholars may be required to assist their respective Departments in teaching or other work as designated for up to 6 hours per week. They will not receive additional pay for these duties, as it is a condition of the research scholarship. Research scholars should NOT work more than 16 hours a week including all paid and unpaid work.

Work performed by graduate students in part-time teaching or other departmental work or as graduate student researchers are subject to tax (whilst Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents are subject to both CPF and tax). Graduate students performing such work are not required to apply for a work permit or employment pass.
